Grand Theft Auto IV is a game of action-adventure open world developed by Rockstar North. The game, preceded by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is the ninth title in the Grand Theft Auto series and the first of the same to appear on seventh generation consoles. It was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Australia, Europe and North America on April 29, 2008 and in Japan on October 30, 2008. The Windows version of the game was released in North America on December 2, 2008 and in Europe on 3 December. Developed two downloadable episodes for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3, the first being The Lost and Damned, released on February 17, 2009, and the second was The Ballad of Gay Tony, which was released on October 29, 2009 .

The game's story runs in Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. The protagonist of the story is Niko Bellic, a war veteran from Eastern Europe, who immigrated to the United States in search of the American dream promised by his cousin, but fast is dragged into a criminal underworld. As in previous editions of the series, the game is composed of elements from driving and shooting in the third person, and has an open world game that gives players more control over their gaming experience. GTA IV is the first console game in the series to feature online multiplayer natively without mods, and contains fifteen game types.
